The Story Behind ‘Lephalale The Musical’

Lephalale The Musical is a  musical play that a tells a story of Lephalale through music, dance and acting. The play was written by Bafedile Masasa (Evergreen Arts Centre-Lephalale) and directed by Thabang Ramabu (Polokwane). The first day of auditions took place on 11 November 2016 at the Ga-Seleka Community Hall and the selection process ended on 20 November 2016. The organization then embarked on promotional shows as part of marketing for the upcoming performances, the first promotion took place at Boxer Superstores in Lephalale town on the 18th of February 2017.

The story takes place in the village of Ga-Shongoane in a Kraal where a Grandmother (MmaMajadibodu) is taking her Granddaughter (Phuti) through a journey of exploring the heartbeat of the Bushveld. Phuti is very ignorant and lacks knowledge about her culture  and where  she comes from. As her  Grandmother is telling here the history of Lephalale we see different  dances from different  cultures in the Lephalale area.

The play also touches the hardships of the past and also promotes social cohesion in the modern days. The show consists of 18 cast members and a band of five members by the name of Truetone.  The band is from Marapong Township in  Lephalale led by Joshua Setladi who is also the lead guitarist.

The members of the Musical are namely:

Costumes – Neshe Kekae
